In fact, for the ten richest people in the year 2014, that million dollars most of dream of is a far distance memory as the nine men and one woman on this rather short list, each has amassed enough fortune to own a small country. Gates is the owner and chairman of Microsoft, and began amasses his fortune with the coming of the computer age. However, Gates’s portfolio doesn’t just list his own company as investments as he has also invested in hotels, real estate, energy and more. He and his wife have also given away billions to help wipe out disease and to other charities as well.

Warren Buffet is the 3rd richest person in the world having amassed a neat little 57.5 billion dollars in his 82 years. He is the CEO of Bershire Hathaway and most of his considerable income has come from the textile company. Buffet bought his first stock at age 11 and has gone on from there amassing his fortune. He has also been noted for being one of the most generous people in the world as well as the richest and regularly donates money to the foundation that Bill Gates and his wife established.

Coming in as number 6 and number 7 of the richest people in the world is Charles and David Koch who amassed their fortune through Koch industries where Charles is the Chairman and David is the Executive Vice President. Both men are figured to be worth 44.8 billion each and both own 42% of Koch industries or a whopping 84% of the company between the two them. It’s unlikely that either of these men will feel the need to financial support the other any time in the near future.

While he may not be the richest man in the world or even the 5th richest, he still has plenty of spending money for a night out and nice dinner.

Christy Walton dubbed the Wal-Mart Widow following the death of her husband John, chairman and son of the founder of Wal-Mart and Sam’s Club is considered to the 9th richest person in the world, having amass a fortune of a neat 35 billion dollars all of which she inherited along with her 402 billion shares of the company following her husbands death. However, Christy isn’t just a rich widow being content to spend her billions foolishly she is engaged in helping to educate young people and is the co-chair of the Children’s Scholarship fund.

Jim Walton may bring of the tail end of the list of richest people in the world, but although his 34.3 billion may be only half the wealth of that accumulated by Bill Gates it is still nothing to sneeze at. Bother of the late John Walton, and brother-in-law to Christy Walton Jim Walton owns 12.6% of the shares of Wal-mart and is the Chairman and CEO of Arvest Bank Group.

However, he did lose a fortune with his total worth dropping from that 73 billion to a smaller but, still healthy 61.8 billion dollars.

From the land of the bullfights and Christopher Columbus comes the 4th richest man in the world.

Amancio Ortega is not only the 4th richest man in the world, but he is the richest man in Spain with a net worth of 54.8 billions most of which came from the major clothing retailer Inditex. Although he stepped down of chair person of the company in 2011 his riches remain intact.

Sweden is well represented in the list of richest of people in the world by Ingvar Kamprad.

However, this hardworking Swede will get a chance to relax and enjoy some of the wealth he has accumulated since he has turned over the Chairperson reigns of IKEA to his oldest son.

While we may envy the wealth of these unique and rich individuals, we also must understand how sacrifice and effort it took them to amass the fortunes that they have today. While we may envy them their money, few of us would envy the total commitment it took to earn their billions, nor would we want to give up some of things they were willing to give up along the way to becoming this rich.
